During whale season, the iconic North Pacific Humpbacks can be spotted all over the waters of Maui. No matter where you look, you'll find quite literally thousands upon thousands of whales enjoying the warmth and sunshine of Maui. In fact, there are so many whales, you'd be hard pressed to keep track of them all. You might be curious, though, just how many humpbacks whale are there exactly?
Lucky for us, whale researchers have a pretty good idea. According to the most recent population studies, researchers estimate that around 11,000 North Pacific Humpback whales visit Hawaiian waters annually. That's about half of the entire North Pacific population! Pretty incredible, huh?
It's even more incredible when you consider that in the 1970s these whales were on the brink of extinction. Thankfully, they've recovered in historic fashion. The population has even made such a comeback that they were removed from the endangered species list in 2016. With their recovery, it's safe to say that the humpback population in Hawaii is healthy and abundant.
That is great news for both the whales and us at Makai Adventures. We love seeing these majestic creatures all around Maui these days, and we hope to continue seeing them for years to come. #MauiWhaleWatchingTours #MakaiAdventures #MauiWhaleWatchingBoats #MauiBoatCharters
