The trip

Dolphins first, then the honu.

We cruise the West Maui coast looking for dolphins, then stop to snorkel with Hawaiian green sea turtles. Family friendly, and all ages are welcome.

We provide Sea Sports snorkel gear (mask, snorkel, fins and float belts), and a naturalist joins you onboard and in the water. Anyone snorkeling must be able to swim, and all children need to be with an adult.

Bring your own snacks and drinks (no glass, please), reef-safe sunscreen and a towel.

We don’t guarantee dolphins or turtles, and where we go depends on the day’s conditions and weather.

Meet the honu

Give them room, and they’ll stay.

Turtle etiquette

Ten feet, always

Green sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, so we keep a respectful 10 feet away at all times. Imagine eating at your favorite restaurant and being followed by 18 strangers. You’d probably lose your appetite. Protection has helped Hawaiian green sea turtle numbers grow, and we’re proud to be part of the solution.

Fun honu facts

The biggest hard shell

The honu is one of seven sea turtle species worldwide, and Maui’s coast is a feeding and mating ground. They’re the largest hard-shelled sea turtle, upwards of 4.5 feet across and over 300 pounds. They can hold their breath for up to 5 hours by slowing their heart to 7–9 beats a minute.

Look closely

The cleaning station

Turtles pick a favorite part of the reef where cleaner wrasse, cleaner shrimp and other reef life wait to clean the algae off their shells. Think of it as an underwater car wash: the fish get a snack and the turtles get a free clean.

Good to know

Snorkel trip questions.

More answers on our FAQs page.

I haven’t snorkeled before. Is this okay?

Yes. This trip is made for easing in. Our crew will show you how it all works, we have flotation for everyone, and a naturalist is in the water with you. You do need to be able to swim.

What should I bring?

A towel, reef-safe sunscreen (no sprays), sunglasses and a hat, a rash guard or other sun-protective clothing, a windbreaker or light jacket, a reusable water bottle, snacks and drinks (no glass), and cash or Venmo for gratuity. Wear your swimwear.

Do you provide prescription masks?

No. If you need one, stop by a snorkel shop before your trip and rent one that fits.

Is there a bathroom on the boat?

Yes, MAKAI has a restroom onboard, and there’s a restroom in the parking lot where you check in.

What if the weather is bad, or the trip doesn’t fill?

The captain makes the weather call, and if a trip is cancelled you can reschedule or get a full refund. This trip needs at least 10 guests to go; we’ll call you the day before if it doesn’t. See our cancellation policy.
